The budding storage utility services market is now trying to carve out
a sustainable model after being labeled as a 'can't miss' opportunity
during the Internet boom era. This IDC report investigates the storage
service provider (SSP) marketplace to discover the underlying market
drivers and to determine what seems to have derailed the ramp of the
burgeoning market. Included in the analysis is a market sizing and
forecast for the Canadian, U.S. and Worldwide SSP markets, capturing
spending on storage utility services whether the service is provided by
pure-play SSPs, outsourcing companies, telecommunication firms, or
other providers.
Two Canadian SSPs are also profiled in the report - Storagepipe and
Storage Alliance - two companies attacking the storage utility market
using different strategies.

platforms to support and an increase in quantity. In many cases, hard
copy has also been eliminated, making digital property invaluable.
But it also causes management headaches.

This IDC study investigates customer perceptions and behaviours when
considering outsourcing backup and recovery services. The storage
service provider market is being driven by such factors as regulatory
compliance and business continuance, but is challenged by organizations
need for control and worry about security. According to Alan Freedman,
Research Manager at IDC Canada, "Storage vendors need to emphasize the
cost benefits and security associated with an outsourced storage
solution. Vendors to need to work with SSPs to make a mark in the
market, communicating to end user organizations the notion that not all
data is core and should remain under control in-house."
