Partnering with an Online Backup Service Provider
By Steven Rodin
As Web 2.0 offers up online applications for businesses -- not just
consumers -- many VARs are looking at how they may leverage the trend to create
new business opportunities and generate additional revenue. One such
opportunity may be clear: online backup services.
Software as a Service (SaaS) is not new, but it can be complex to deliver
and a hard-sell to companies used to having applications in-house, completely
within their control and internal infrastructure. However, online backup and
storage provides a clear value proposition. Online backup can enable any
organization to reliably back up data within its budget and staff constraints.
It's an ideal option for firms that need to optimize onsite data storage by
archiving old data offsite; meet regulatory requirements and adhere to internal
policies; enable small branch offices to back up easily and reliably with no
onsite IT support; and most importantly enable data to be retrieved and
restored quickly and reliably to minimize downtime in a world where everything
must run in real time.

Disaster Recovery organization says Toronto needs to prepare
by Briony Smith
The Toronto-based not-for-profit Disaster
Recovery Information Exchange has called for the businesses, government, and
emergency services of Toronto
to band together to provide a disaster-proof front against catastrophes, but
some local IT vendors, while enamored of the idea, are skeptical of its
feasibility.
“We’ve watched with horror and interest the events in New
York, Madrid, and London where it’s not just
the cities responding, but the critical infrastructure organizations and
people. As we watched, we wondered, ‘Would Toronto respond well?’” said Michael
Smith, president of business continuity consulting firm ReadySmith and co-chair
of the Toronto Incident Management Exercise (TIME) initiative.

Can online backup open the SaaS door?
Regulatory issues and business continuity require SMBs and VARs targeting Canadian mid-market to examine backup options
By: Steven Rodin
Canadian businesses of all sizes are relying on digital data more than ever, but while large enterprises have the requisite budget for redundant data storage and backup, SMBs often are without a safety net when it comes to their critical business information.
With the country's corporate landscape dominated by SMBs, there is an excellent opportunity for VARs to deliver backup technologies through a Software-as-a-Service (Saas) model, and online storage and backup is an excellent first choice for VARs wishing to dip their toes in the SaaS pool: It has a very clear value proposition.
SaaS isn't new, but it can be complex to deliver and it can be difficult to demonstrate the value of online applications to companies who are used to having applications in-house and completely within their control. By partnering with an online backup service provider, VARs can position themselves as an expert and help companies with their backup concerns.
VARs can also help educate businesses on the
needs for offsite backup: Not only is safeguarding data essential to
keeping a business running, but regulatory pressures are also making
business continuity more imperative than ever before.
Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents
Act (PIPEDA), a group of data protection directives that limit trade
with nations not providing privacy protection, creates data management
and security obligations for any organization.

Online
backup and recovery-specifically, outsourcing storage operations to
third-party services providers-may make more sense than ever. Whether
for consumers, small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs), or larger
enterprises, outsourcing a critical business function such as backup
and recovery, which requires high reliability and technical expertise,
entails a certain amount of risk. But as more and more tapes are lost
and hackers find new ways to break encryption codes, the
risk-to-benefit ratio is in some cases tipping in favor of trusting
outside experts to back up-and recover-your data.
For smaller companies that do not have dedicated IT staffs, adequately
securing data is nearly impossible without outside intervention. Even
companies that have multiple sites must have the know-how to ensure
data is adequately encrypted and physically secure. For companies on
either end of the spectrum, the amount of labor required to
conscientiously manage the backup process is draining-both on the
personnel involved and the budget.
